Wireless Application Services Provider

Waste Lubricating Oil Re-refining Project

Wireless Application Services Provider

Wireless Applications Services Provider (WASP) will offer services and applications that users can access wirelessly in Saudi Arabia.  WASP will make it possible for a customer to use a cellphone, Personal Digital Assistant (PDA, such as Palm or Handspring) or other wireless device to gain untethered access to services. These services can include government-provided and educational information, current news and commentary, personal financial information (e.g., bank accounts) and stock market data, sports scores, prayer times and other religious information.  Messaging services could include Short Messaging Services (SMS), Enhanced Messaging Services (EMS) and Multimedia Messaging Services (MMS).

WASP will also design, implement and support highly secure services for corporations and government authorities.  Remote employees will be able to use wireless devices to access their corporate e-mail accounts, corporate databases, and other useful company information.  Field staff, such as oil workers, will be able to send key data to corporate offices. Salesmen will be able to check inventory and place orders from offsite.  Police officers will be able to perform background checks while away from headquarters.  An MOU has been signed and some members of senior management and possible Saudi investors identified.

Sagia has issued a license.  Two potential technology partners have been identified and discussions begun.

Waste Lubricating Oil Re-refining Project

The collection and disposal of waste lubricating oils pose a worldwide environmental problem.  In Saudi Arabia, approximately 300,000 tons/year of lubricating oils are sold of which 50-60% should be recoverable.  This valuable resource can be re-refined to virgin base oil properties using appropriate technologies.  DevCorp is developing a project to establish two waste oil re-refining projects, each capable of processing 25000 tons of waste oil per year, to collect, re-refine, and blend these used oils.

Since availability of waste oil in required quantities and meeting the specifications is a vital factor for the success of the project, one of the partners is a well established waste oil collection company in the Kingdom. Long-term agreements, for obtaining the feed waste oil and for the offtake/export of the final product, are being negotiated.

  • Anticipated partners: International Corporation for Petroleum (ICP)
  • Estimated project cost: US$ 25 million.
