Linear Alkyl Benzene Project

Plastbau Middle East and Plastbau Holdings

CFL and HID Electric Lamps

Hassad Epichlorohydrin Project

Linear Alkyl Benzene Project

N-Paraffin is an intermediate chemical used as the primary feedstock in the production of Linear Alkyl Benzene (LAB), the primary biodegradable ingredient for the production of Linear Alkyl Sulfonates (LAS) used in detergents.  As a multimillion dollar project, an LAB plant will be built and operated in Yanbu, utilizing n-Paraffin from off-shore sources.  Large and rapidly growing markets for LAB exist in the Middle East/Africa and Southeast Asian regions.

The LAB plant will be constructed in Yanbu with financing from the private sector and the Saudi Industrial Development Fund (SIDF).  Construction will require three years.

Plastbau Middle East and Plastbau Holdings

The joint venture company Plastbau Middle East (PME) has been registered in Bahrain with Plastedil holding a 25 % stake in the equity of the company.  PME has the exclusive rights and responsibility to spearhead the propagation of Plastbau® Building System in the Middle East Region. PME will essentially be an extension of Plastedil focusing on the Middle East Region and will be involved in the promotion of Plastbau® technology, sale of Plastbau® manufacturing machinery, technical guidance during installation and operation, marketing support etc., to all customers in the region.

A special purpose vehicle, Plastbau Holdings BSC (c), has been established as a Bahrain registered company for the specific purpose of promoting and participating in the Plastbau® manufacturing companies to be established in the region. PME holds a 50 % stake in the equity of Plastbau Holdings and is the driving force behind Plastbau Holdings, which acts as the holding company for all the investments to be made in the various manufacturing entities.

CFL and HID Electric Lamps

This lighting products project will establish a manufacturing facility for 3 million units of Energy Saving Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) and 1 million units of High Intensity Discharge Lamps (HID), such as Metal Halide Lamps (MH) and High Pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps (HPS), in Saudi Arabia. Long-life CFL offer energy conservation for residences commercial establishments, shopping malls, and offices and cost savings over time.  HID lamps are particularly useful for lighting highways and streets, industrial sites, commercial establishments, shopping malls, showrooms, and public areas.  Local production of CFL and HID lamps would reduce import needs.  Both products would be marketed in Saudi Arabia and exported to the Middle East and Africa.

A Joint Venture Agreement has been signed between the Saudi Partner National Company for Glass Industries (Zoujaj), Indian Technology Partner Indo Asian and the SOLP.  IAF has technical collaborations with Heinrich Kopp AG, Doepke & Co AG, Moeller GmbH, Theben Werke Zeitautamatik GmbH, Technoelectric s.r.l, MEM, UK, EMU of Switzerland.  Market surveys and feasibility studies have been completed.

The loan application to SIDF has been submitted.  Application for 20,000 square meters of land for the manufacturing facility has been made to the Al Hasa    Industrial City and should be allotted by end 2005.

Foreign/Technology partner: Indo Asian Fuse Gears (IAF)

Proposed equity distribution: 50% SOLP and IAF, 50% Zoujaj

Estimated investment: US$ 11 million

Hassad Epichlorohydrin Project

The proposed plant will produce epichlorohydrin, caustic soda, hydrochloric acid, and calcium chloride in the Jubail Industrial Area.  The epichlorohydrin will be used by JANA, a Saudi Joint Stock Company, in its production of epoxy resin for use mainly in the GCC region.  All major inputs are available in the Kingdom.  At present the project is under early stages of implementation with financing arranged and EPC contracts awarded.  All feedstock commitments for the plant and offtake agreements for the majority of the production  have been obtained. The plant is estimated to begin commercial production in 2007.

  • Technology: Showa Denko Kaisah for epichlorohydrin, Messo/Bertrams for calcium chloride, BiPolar for hydrochloric acid
  • Technical Advisor: Tamilnadu Petroproducts Limited, India
  • Proposed Investment: JANA/NAMA
  • Estimated cost: $ 170 million
